A story about overcoming fear as a writer.

My plane landed back home at 6 pm in Phoenix (which felt like 12 pm in Suriname). After 12 incredible days away, I was back with a heart full of gratitude and inspiration.

This adventure began with a simple email from a friend inviting me to speak at the Social Media Conference Suriname:

“Will you come speak about copywriting and content marketing?”

Without hesitation, I replied, “Yes!”

What my friend didn’t know was that I had been dreaming of visiting Suriname and speaking at this very conference since meeting him in 2018 at a social media event in San Diego. And yet, even as I said yes—I knew I needed to overcome my fear as a writer and speaker. This would be the biggest audience I had spoken to—150 people or more were expected at my session.

To my delight, the conference exceeded all expectations. The attendees brought unmatched energy, and the entire event was first-class, featuring live music, spoken word performances, insightful panel discussions, and expert speakers sharing their top strategies.

Throught a series of strategies (another topic I may write about), I was able to stay in a zone of calm, creative and confident so that I actually had fun when I stepped on stage and enjoyed every moment!

My Biggest Takeaway:

Say YES—even when it means overcoming fear as a writer or you are nervous about an opportunity!

It’s natural to feel unsure or wonder if you’re ready. Fear and doubt will always whisper reasons to say no. I certainly had my share of excuses:

  • The invitation came only three weeks before the event.
  • We were in the middle of selling our house and moving.
  • I didn’t have a presentation ready.
  • I felt mom guilt about being away for so long.

But instead of letting these obstacles hold me back, I asked myself the one question that changes everything:

How can I make this work?

Once I shifted my focus, the pieces fell into place. Just three weeks later, I was boarding a plane to Miami, on my way to Guyana, and finally to Paramaribo, Suriname.

A view I would have missed if I didn't overcome my fear as a writer: the rainforest and trees in the foreground with the Suriname River and more rainforest beyond the river.
