James Altucher once said, “Read every book, blog, website, whatever about what you want to be an expert in.”

Even before I worked up the courage to declare myself a writer, books were some of my best friends. They spoke deeply and profoundly to me, giving me language for thoughts, feelings and experiences I struggled to express. They became my constant companion and when I was ready to build a business around my words and writing, they catapulted me forward.

These are three of my recent favorites that have shaped my writing mindset, business strategy and faith.

Book 1: Think & Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

Here are money-making secrets that can change your life. This book will teach you the secrets that will bring you a fortune. It will show you not only what to do but how to do it.

One of my favorite quotes,

Mind control is the result of self-discipline and habit. You either control your mind or it controls you.

Book 2: Story Brand by Donald Miller

This revolutionary method for connecting with customers provides readers with the ultimate competitive advantage, revealing the secret for helping their customers understand the compelling benefits of using their products, ideas, or services.

As a writer, Donald Miller had me at STORY. Being able to use the medium I love most as the foundation of my author brand and business has revolutionized the way I write books and serve my clients.

One of my favorite quotes,

In every line of copy we write, we’re either serving the customer’s story or descending into confusion; we’re either making music or making noise.

Book 3: When God Calls A Writer by Deanne Welsh

Is it cheating that my own book changed my life? Probably, but the message in this book transformed my writing career from a burdensome solitary thing I was pushing uphill on my own, to a connected adventure fueled by God’s power and blessing.

When God Calls A Writer is a book about knowing that your desire to write is both a gift and a calling from God. Your creativity connects you deeply to Him.

This book weaves the story of Moses with the story of a writer. Do you wonder if God is calling you to write, but you feel unqualified? What are the signs that God is calling you? Do you struggle to hear God’s voice and guidance about your writing career? Are you eager for a powerful transformation in your faith and your writing?

To celebrate its launch, I’m giving away complimentary copies. Claim yours here.
